Venice is like ….rice (for the sake of better comparison).
Its satiating, boring (when u spent too much time there), yet..u cant get enough of it ( U never get tired of consuming rice everyday, aren’t u??especially when you are a Malay)

Arrived in Venice main train station, St. Lucia at 5.30 a.m., and the bitter cold of winter with the foggy atmosphere (thanks to the hundreds of canal there) acutely struck my lung. For a moment I thought Im gonna conceive a pneumonia, until I got myself into the Train Station Cafe , and stylishly with "sonotano Italiano (pure Italian), ordered my first cup of Venetian Cafe du latter. This is permissible according to Venetian tradition.

You can always order Espresso at any time of the day, but to sip a Capuccino or Cafe du latte after lunch is a big disgrace. All that cream into after-lunch stomach.Perhaps that’s one way the Italian took care of their to-dream lean body, but I on the other hand, would resist the milk simply due to my Lactose Intolerance :)

In the Vaporetti strolling down the Canale Grande

Our main transportation is the Vaporetti (water bus..transliterated as : Less-romantic-motor-powered-packed-with-people Gondola) Since any modes of land transportation inside Venice is prohibited, (and its impossible to pass even a bike within the narrow street of Venice), the Vaporetti had been the main, and only modes of transportation there. Its not efficient though, walking is a lot more faster.

But walking have its drawback as well. You cannot NOT GET LOST in Venice. There’s no use sticking to address, and a map wouldnt help that much. Even a Venetian inhabitant got lost now and then. So, I took up the newstander seller advice.. "Take out your nose from the map, breath the air, walk in any direction, and you will encounter Venice is not that hard to master. And you WILL get lost, but then again, thats part of the fun" :) .

He’s pretty much correct. You will need only several landmark for orientation, the St Mark Square, Rialto Bridge, Accademia Bridge, and Plaza Roma would be sufficient. And really, the more times you spent walking in Venice, the better you get along with it. In my 1st day, it took me 20 minutes to walk from my apartment to the St Mark square. By the 3rd day, I can reach there in 2 minutes :)

There’s a lot u can say about the condition of an apartment according to how the toilet look like

Our Apartment was superb!!!! Location and facilities is excellent!! and it worth every euro we spent!! Except that the given address thru the net is actually not the address of the apartment, and I spent almost 1 hour WALKING almost half of Venice trying to find the apartment, only to know that it is actually located only 5 minutes from my starting point. I have got quite irritated by the time we arrived, since the owner request us to contact him thru his mobile, but stupidly switched it off the whole time. I was ready to bark to him, but the apartment condition really freeze my word.

St Marco Square : In Daytime, Night, and Dusk

There’s not much to see in Venice, unlike Rome. There’s the legendary Rialto Bridge, the breathtaking St Marks Square and the Career Palace, the Old Clock Tower, and several other churches. And of course, there’s the Gondola (which will left you drain if you get into one thru the Grand Canal). We do visit the Musee Civici, the palace, the Bridge of Sigh, and the numerous church which I have lost counted.

Life is very very slow in Venice. Its not hectic, a perfect place for us to rejuvenate after the tiring tour in Rome. I enjoyed strolling by the river bank, day dreaming with the sun setting far towards the Adriatic Sea. I love walking for hours searching for the best-value pizzeria, and then stop for an espresso sipped for hours while watching the Gondola passed by. I missed the slow Vaporetti, the fog, the way of how slow time passed by. It felt like I was given 30 hours per day.

We practically LIVE in Venice by the 2nd day. We went to the market and supermarket, purchasing groceries, and I cook dinner . Real dinner !! Not that toss-into-microwave thingy. Its pasta with tuna, garlic, spices and even a spark of apple cider!! While strolling here and there like a true Venetian, we met up with a Malay family who are also visiting Venice. For a moment they thought we live here, due to how confidence we walk, and with no maps at hand. Chin up guys!!! The next time u bring ur girl here, let her be perplexed with ur sense of direction :P

On our last night in Venice, we decided to try the expensive, yet well-known Venetian Seafood Spaghetti. It cost about 100 euro for 3 course-dinner for 5 people. I’m not sure whether the portion worth it, but I’m sure as hell savour the experience :)

Dusk in Venice

There’s time when I strolled alone in the Piazza, looking down to St Mark’s Campanile, I wish I could be here with that-somebody. I’m not sure you are going to read this or not, and most probably you are not going to. But I want you to know, everytime I walked down the street, every sound of water splashing from the passing Gondolla, and every aroma of Panini, and every taste of Gelati, I knew I would enjoyed it more if you could be by my side….

And thus, when the tower clock strikes 10 pm, with the chilly night breeze in Piazza St Marco, I caught myself sitting down accross the WInged Lion of St Mark, thinking of you..

NIGHT IN VENICE

Love, in this summer night,
do you recall

Midnight

, and

Venice

, and those skies of June
Thick-sown with stars, when from the still lagoon
We glided noiseless through the dim canal?
A sense of some belated festival
Hung round us, and our own hearts beat in tune
With passionate memories that the young moon
Lit up on dome and tower and palace wall.
We dreamed what ghosts of vanished loves made part
Of that sweet light and trembling, amorous air.
I felt in those rich beams that kissed your hair,
Those breezes, warm with bygone lovers’ sighs-
All the dead beauty of Venice in your eyes,
All the old loves of Venice in my heart.

Romemap

"The Eternal City"
Caput mundi ("capital [lit. head] of the world"),
la Città Eterna
("the Eternal City"),
Limen Apostolorum ("threshold of the Apostles"),
la città dei sette colli
("the city of the seven hills") or simply l’Urbe ("the City")

These are some few nicknames that justifiedly gave Rome, the capital city of Italy its charming character.

I could mumbling for hours telling you about the history of Rome, but I figure you can know that urself by reading Wikipedia :)

And I knew none of you would like to hear me chatter my skanky travel from Moscow to Rome, so suffice if I stated here that it went with little-less trouble compared to my previous travel. And while we landed at night, it prove not difficult to find the location of my hostel as it is located like, 5 minutes walk (with luggages, 10 minutes) from the Termini Central Train Station.

Hostel wasnt that bad. Its pretty nice actually, with all the helpful guides, maps, breakfast, and 3 bathrooms!!! No lining up in the morning :) and we made friends with a brazilian called Paolo (i think) and a Japanese (Masaki) studying in Italy. Afiq had a very serious conversation with Paolo about the future of world football, enumerting names I cant even recall, while me and Masaki had a deep conversation about multi-mix religion in Japan. (Duh………….)

Hostel..

Then there’s the historical place. The "cite histoire" (The historical city) which actually encompass central Rome, being named as one of UNESCO world heritage site. There’s the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, Roman Forum, Circus Maximus, and several other stone structures which sound romanly-beautiful, but did not actually exert their structure into an uncomprehensible structure. I mean, there’s a stone standing, and they claimed it to be a structure from a pillar of a beautiful temple dedicated to Uranus. And how am I supposed to imagine that??? Then there’s the Pantheon, which was a Roman temple, now turned into a church when Christianity reached its peaks here.

Dsc09946

Colosseum

A visit to Rome wouldnt be complete without a tour to the St Peter’s Cathedral n Square in Vatican City. Its a lil bit paradoxical though, the biggest church located in the smallest country :) We had to wake up real early on Sunday morning, skipping breakfast and catching our breath while trying to get in the line for the Vatican Museum. 7.30 a.m and the line had stretched to about half kilometre!! and the door open actually only at 8.45 am!! WE’re very lucky though (alhthough I had sprained my ankle during the morning marathon earlier), since its the last Sunday of the month, we got to skip the tickets fee (thats 20 euro!! or 4 kebabs according to Afiq) , and we got to visit the legendary Sistine Chapel with its legendary drawing, the Last Judgement (usually they are closed on ordinary Sunday)…

Dsc00103

Vatican CIty..ramainya org beratur nak masuk!!

Then there’s the St Angel castle. A fortress on the bank of a river. Looking out from the top of the tower, Rome couldnt be more breathtakingly beautiful. I cant get enough pictures there, though most of my picture is miserable since Raja wasnt that good in handling cameras. No scratch that. He’s bad with camera

Dsc00123

St  Angle Castle

I havent planning on returning to Rome, but I do make that coin-throwing ceremony at the famous Trevi fountain, which legend tells, will ensure our return to Rome. If I’m not mistaken, they have one such fountain in Madrid and Barcelona too. Do all fountain does such magic?? If so, I’m sure as hell not going to throw a coin into one of  Volgograd dead-during-most-time-of-the-year-except-2 weeks-in-spring fountain.
Dsc00191

Trevi Fountain…

All an all, Rome is an easy city to visit. Friendly and helpful people, halal food available by the corner, extensive Metro and Bus system, though opening schedule of certain monuments can be confusing. ( I mean, which idiot close from 4pm to 6pm ,and reopen only to close back at 7 pm???)

And obviously, Rome isnt a shopping heaven. Things arent that expensive, it just that, the high street isnt that high at all. Most of shopping boutiques and emporium are scattered throughout the city, so its got a lil; bit tiring , especially when u try to find for an appropriate size jacket for under 30 euro (yeah..thats me)

Astonishingly beautiful city, but it doesnt keep u blind from the smell of home-made pizza from the nearest Pizzeria, and numerous Gellateria (Ice cream stalls) serving Pistachio n Nutella flavoured Ice Cream !!! OMG, its a sin to skip the gellateria.

Of course there’s the bad things too:-
The free pasta from the hostel sucks, but then again, delicious is
subjective, according to Afiq, as he pick up the last macaroni from his
plate and hover over it :) kudos bro!!!
Dumin lost his camera AND wallet . How worse can that be?? Of course it can be worse, if he lost his ATM card and passport as well. Thank God, thats not the case
The olympic stadium where ROma and LAzzio supposed to be playing is actually off-limits for visitors!! How absurd is that!! I knew they share the stadium, but at least they can establish some mutual understandling like AC MIlan and InterMilan, instad of shooing us off.
Dsc00090

The absurdly off-limits Olympic Stadium

Dumin and Hisham got separated from us on the second day, and thus, they havent the chance to see the street where all International Food congregated, with smells of beef briyani accompanied with chinese speaking sellers by the road offering us their cheap knockouts.

That last night, we chugged of on an Inter City train to Venice. An 5 hour trip, with a snoring old man by our (my) side, emphasizing on switching off the lamp so his sleep wouldnt get disturbed while he obviously disturbed ours….HAve u watched Eurotrip??yeah, the setting is exactly the same with the "Miscusi" scene. :)

I fall off asleep with my Ipod trying to block the snoring off, while all the time, my mind couldnt have a rest, thinking what Venice will have to offer for us….

IL SOGNO ITALIANO: Part 1 : The Prep’s

1. This is the least-prepared journey I have came up with. Relatively to Spain, France, Berlin n Czech, I have made no intense research for this journey, which prove to brought about a lot of humorous events on the future. While it proves to raise a lot of difficulties, I found it enjoyable sometimes to get lost in the city with your 12kg luggage strolling behind you to find the correct adress for the hostel.

2.Essential preparations: The itineraries. COnsisted of 10 days, I came up with the coloured-table Excel spreadsheet , forming a time line that I believe is important for all of us to keep pace in our journey. I foun
d it sooner that it was only me who give a feck about the timeline. Most of the member actually left the itineraries tucked under their pillow in Volgograd!!!Confirmeditaly

3.Hostel, apartment, and a low-cost hotel reservations. All made via the hostelworlds.com, and using my new AmBank debit card..uh, actually I dont have enough money in there, so for the last hostel reservation, I had to borrow Zamir’s debit card…eh aku dah bayar ke belum ha???

4. Flight tickets!!!! Difficult as hell to get one!!!While searching here and there for the lowest fare, "Euro"flot (Spell: aeroflot, the Russian flag carrier) came up with a discounted fare to any one-way destination in Europe. Offered last till end of November. So, by November we scrambled up and down to the Aeroflot office, and thanks to the new aeroflot website, it minimalise the conversation needed with the unfriendly aeroflot officer there. With their around-the-clock grim faces, I wonder how could they post up a sign on the door saying "IF WE"RE NOT SMILING, ITS JUST BECAUSE WE ARE WORKING HARD TO MAKE U SMILE"..hahah, u euroflot ppl can kiss my arse..
After spending approx 300euro for the discounted international tickets, and thinking that we’ve saved up a lot, and thanking God for the fact that we manage to grab the chances, the next few days , aeroflot post up a new advertisement. "Discount for discounted-tickets".Duh…………..
Newsflash, while we saved up a lot for international tickets, Euroflot actually cheat by increasing the domestic prices!! OMG my Vog-Mow ticket cost like half the price of the intnl ticket!!!

5. Dont even get me start with the russian red-tape bureaucracy just to get a visa that is actually you are the owner!! Why do they really like to keep other people’s stuff???? Oh, I forgot , stealing is not a crime here. Ask that to Lenin or Stalin when they started stealing all the farmlands and making it state-owned. I guess they apply that to the Passport service in our universities too….

6.I made a complete list of essential budgets to all members of the journey. It was even individualised.  A complete list about how much each people need to spend how much. Yet, Raja came and asked me like for the n-th times, "eh, ko rasa brapa euro baru cukup ha???"

7. A complete map of metro system in Rome n Milan, and waterbus route in Venice. Since my printer is b/w here, it really didnt helped when I cant differentiate the "blue line" with the "light-blue line"

8. A rough guide to Venice, Milan, n Rome provided by hostelworlds. Some budget tips I found on the net, and the not-helpful location of our hostel marked on the unsufficient city map.A prayer compass, and prayer schedule for all members.

9. Some Italian phrase : Ciao ! is Hello and goodbye..really!! I kid you not…when a cashier saying Ciao!! U cant really know whether she/he is saying goodbye to the previous customer, or is welcoming you….The famous Mi’scusi is Excuse me (thanks to Eurotrip , a teen-semi-porn film)..Permisso is "grant me access"…Grazie is thanks…Arriverdeci is Goodbye..Per FAvore is Please….and "amo la vostra maniglia di amore" is "I love your love handles"

10. A to-do-list is essential for a journey. Printed a copy for each member acutally diminish the necessity for last-minute-time-consuming briefing. Thank God they comply with the list (or so I hope).

11. An "emergency copy" of all of our travels documents. 2 copies actually. I brought one for myself, and left one with Haneep. Just in case. I really learn my lesson since Ai chen lost her ticket in Madrid n we have no photocopies, and the recent overwhelmingly bad-news about how Chris lost his passport, and how the Malaysian embassy in Moscow being such an ass..
